Indisputably one of the most enchanting and elegant small houses in San Miguel, this lot remained untouched for some years because of its small size and odd configuration.   In 2001 Win and Janet Carrick together with architect Juan Carlos Valdez saw the possibilities on this triangular piece of land, and almost entirely via e-mail since they were in the States during its construction, they worked closely together and the result is this wonderfully unique home.   The dining and living areas are charmingly furnished with warm, comfortable furniture, the cushions on the dining room chairs hand embroidered in the State of Michoacán.   Colorful folk art, statues, family portraits and paintings adorn walls and counter tops.  The intimate yet serviceable kitchen is witness to the odd shape of the lot.  The most outstanding feature is the rectangular pond guarded by St. Francis, which runs from outdoor to in, keeping the elements out via a plate glass window.  Outdoors, a tranquil ramada (indoor/outdoor entertainment area) is furnished with plush equipale furniture and contains a barbecue area for entertaining.  Upstairs the first thing one notices are the spectacular collection of masks which the Carricks found (and continue to collect) during their many travels throughout Mexico.  More folk art adorns the guest bedroom with a large wall hanging covering one wall which Win and Janet found in Mexico City.  The master bedroom contains much art by local artist Miguel Angel whose sculptures and paintings are to be found at many of San Miguel’s most respected boutiques.  Much of his work is also to be seen downstairs.  An outstanding oversized rosary adorns the wall behind the bed.  Leading from the bedroom is an appealing plant and flower filled patio containing a Jacuzzi tub.  Up another set of stairs they have planted a rooftop garden with a delightful tile and cantera fountain, seating and sunning spots, and another barbecue area.   All the fountains, gardens and patios were designed and planted by local master landscape architect Timeteo Wachter.  Win and Janet, two of the House & Garden Tour’s most loyal volunteers, divide their time between San Miguel and North Carolina.
